Kinesiology taping; what is it and how does it help?

November 9, 2024

What is kinesiology taping?

KT taping is the application of specialized flexible stretchy tape to parts of the body to help it heal itself. Many professional therapists use this modality as part of their practice; whether it's for humans, dogs, or horses.  It's non-invasive and simple to learn, so anyone can learn to do it with some guidance.

Benefits of Kinesiology Taping

Kinesiology tape can be applied to almost any part of your dog's body using specific placement and amounts of stretch to accomplish the desired result.

It can help with many problems involving the muscles and skeletal system.  Here are some ways that it's used.

-   Kinesiology tape can be applied to the body to stimulate neuron receptors, therefore blocking pain signals.

-  KT tape can be applied around painful joints to help support proper function without limiting ROM.

-  KT taping can be used to reduce inflammation by decreasing pressure in the lymphatic drainage system.

-  Kinesiology taping can help increase circulation, therefore speeding up healing.

It is important to note that KT tape should NOT be used with open wounds, cancerous lesions, or conditions that need a vet's expert evaluation first.  This tape can sometimes cause irritation or increase swelling, especially if applied incorrectly so it's important to know what to watch out for and how to use it.

How can you have KT taping help your dog?

Many bodyworkers are familiar with taping, so it's not difficult to find one who knows specific approaches to assist your dog with whatever their issue might be.  There are also classes to help the dog or horse guardian learn what they need to help their animal best.

If you want to learn how to help your dog or horse with kinesiology taping, I recommend a course through Angel's Animals.  I believe you'll find it well worth it!

For dogs, there is the Canine Kinesiology Taping Non-Certification Course.

For horses, there is the Equine Kinesiology Taping Non-Certification Course.
